January 2012:
LINCOLN, Bailgate Methodist church, and LINCOLN, Burton Road Methodist Chapel.
_
What
a good start to our 2012 visits! I was very surprised that 24 of
you were there yesterday! We were lucky to have Chris Johnson
to speak to us at Bailgate Methodist Church. It was good that Revd
Mark Stennett, the recently appointed Methodist Minister for Lincoln
North Circuit, was able to be with us for both churches. Chris’s
talk and that which Mark gave at Burton Road Chapel taught us a great
deal about Methodism in general and also its history in Lincoln.
Bailgate Methodist Church
_
We
met at Bailgate Methodist church and after Chris’s talk we had a
closer look at the church and then had refreshments together with
several other groups who were meeting on the church site.
In the nineteenth century the Bailgate area of uphill Lincoln was prosperous and fashionable and this led to the building in 1880 of this magnificent church which has a capacity with the balconies to seat 700 people! There are some very interesting stained glass windows, two of which came from an Anglican church in Southampton in 1986.
In the late 1880s a few laymen in the Bailgate Church decided that a new church was needed in the Burton Road area which was rapidly developing. This was described as a place where all are welcome ‘even if they can’t afford a decent suit’! A number of cottage and tent meetings were held. In 1891 a church was established in a publicans outbuildings. This building had benches without backs, there was a mud floor and when it rained the congregation needed umbrellas. What a contrast with Bailgate. This church is at present time being updated as funds permit.
I was impressed at both churches with their brightness and obviously they are very enthusiastic with so much going on This was an excellent meeting which for me made the organising very well worthwhile. Thank you to all who attended.
