Our November visit, the last visit of our group for 2016, was a tour of some of the side chapels and stained glass in Lincoln Cathedral.
Our first stop was the Russell Chantry, named after Bishop Russell, bishop from 1480- 1494.The chantry walls were painted by Duncan Grant, a member of the Bloomsbury Group, in 1953. They depict St Blaise, the patron saint of wool workers. On the west wall is a mural of Lincoln, showing the Brayford Pool and the cathedral. All the faces are images of Grant’s friends, and the images were controversial when they were unveiled.
Also in the chapel on the north side are the only remaining brasses not plundered by Cromwell’s forces when they caused damage to the cathedral during a siege in 1644.

Near to the chantry is a recent sculpture of the Virgin Mary and Child, carved from Lincolnshire limestone by Aiden Hart.
On the north wall is the Fleming Chantry, and oldest surviving cadaver tomb in England, that of Bishop Richard Fleming. At the top of the tomb he is depicted as in life. Beneath is a skeletal image, ‘As I am now, so shall you be.’ Death is a great leveller for all, bishop or peasant.

In the north transept are the three service chapels. The soldier’s chapel is dedicated to St George, the seaman’s chapel to St Andrew, and the airman’s chapel to St Michael. Here are memorials to Bomber Command.
