November 2012:
SCAMPTON, St. John the Baptist.
Our November visit was to St John the Baptist at Scampton. The church nestles at the hill foot in Scampton village is of early Norman architecture. The church was reduced in size in 1794 and restored, having fallen into a state of disrepair.
In 1879 the church was extended to its current size by Bodley and Garner of London. Susan Deacon gave a most interesting talk, with amusing anecdotes of ghosts and other characters associated with the church.
It was a timely visit with Remembrance Sunday in a few days, as the churchyard contains the graves of 68 English and 32 German aircrew who lost their lives in the Second World War. These graves have many visitors from all over world. By the gate leading down to the church is a Cross of Sacrifice with the war graves behind. Our thanks go to Fiona for arranging the visit, with no doubt some input from John K who we all were pleased to see again after his recent absence.
