November 2011:
GRIMSTHORPE CASTLE chapel.
I have often said that
the form of any of out visits can never be entirely planned as so
much depends on local circumstances. This was certainly the case
for our November visit to the Chapel in Grimsthorpe Castle.
Lady Willoughby explaining the development of the present building
We were met by our guide Baroness Willoughby de Eresby who, before we proceeded to the Castle, explained the development of the present building from the medieval small Castle with the King John’s Tower being incorporated into the present building when it was rebuilt by Vanburgh.
The Great Hall
We entered the Castle via the State Dining Room and then proceeded to the Great Hall where Lady Willoughby explained a number of features and in particular the portraits of seven Kings who had specially favoured the Willoughby and Bertie families. Our next stop was the magnificent Chinese Drawing Room. This was a fascinating room with a fine view taking in the lake.

We then came to the Chapel. Lady Willoughby showed us a book of fifteenth century sermons amongst which was one preached by Bishop Latimer in the Chapelonly a few months before his execution in Oxford. There is a memorial in the Chapel to Lady Willoughby’s grandmother, Nancy Astor who was the first woman MP.
The Chapel
We spent some time here and then walked through the gardens before having a group photograph taken in front of the main gates. This spectacular visit is best described by the photographs.
