January 2014:
LINCOLN St Anne's Bede Houses.
The
first visit of the Group in 2014 was to the Bedehouses in Sewell Road
Lincoln. On 2 January 24 members gathered in the Chapel at the
bedehouses and were met by the Warden for what was an extremely
interesting and different visit.
The whole of the Bedehouse complex was designed by A. W. N. Pugin for Richard Waldo Sibthorpe with the chapel being built of brick with stone dressings c1853 by W Butterfield. The nave and chancel are under a plain tiled continuous roof with four bays. On either side there are two chamfered recesses with 3-light and 4-light pointed arched windows.

The fittings include traceried oak stalls and desks with bookstands and candlesticks. The memorials include eight late nineteenth century brasses in tiled surrounds mainly to members of the Sibthorp family.
We were then taken to one of the bedehouses which is now used as a community centre for the tenants. The fourteen bede houses are well maintained listed buildings. Each has it's own private entrance with entrance porch, lounge, kitchen, bedroom with en-suite facilities, gas central heating and small court-yard.
The warden told us about the conditions for acceptance of new tenants before handing over to one of the tenants who told us of his experiences whilst living there for the last two years. He then took us for a visit to his own living quarters.
This was a particularly enjoyable and interesting visit and we are most grateful to the warden and tenant for their input.
JRK – Thanks to Max Kitchen and Malcolm Pritchard for the photographs
