February 2014:
LINCOLN St Peter at Gowts, and LINCOLN St Mary's Guildhall
The Group visited St Peter at Gowts church which is in the High Street Lincoln for our February 2014 meeting. Our guide was the Vicar, Revd J. Cullimore and he explained that, although the tower is Saxon, the greater part of the nave is Norman with a side aisle being added in the thirteenth century. The chancel was rebuilt in the nineteenth century. An unusual feature is the Norman font which is said to be made from part of a Roman pillar.
The church is large and congregation small so ways are being sought to make more use of it.
After spending time walking around the church we were taken to the adjacent St Mary’s Guildhall. This medieval building was restored by Lincoln Civic Trust in 1984 and the West Range is now St Peter at Gowts Parish Hall.
A section of the Roman Foss Way can be seen beneath the floor – complete with wheel ruts!
This visit was a particularly fascinating experience and we are most grateful to our guide.
I am grateful to Max Kitchen for photographs and help from Eric Wilson with the text. JRK
