August 2012:
MARTIN-BY-HORNCASTLE St. Michael's, and HORNCASTLE St. Mary's.
St. Michael's church, Martin-by-Horncastle
Our first church for our August visit was St. Michael's church, Martin-by-Horncastle, stands in a farmyard. The farmer Mr Poucher who looks after this redundant church explained that the parish of Martin was abolished in 1936 and it is now absorbed in the parish of Roughton. The building is almost all Norman and Early English, a narrow 13th century chancel arch leads to a dark but atmospheric chancel.
St. Mary's church, Horncastle
Moving on to Horncastle our visit commenced with refreshments served by the local U3A chairman and her helpers!
Our very competent guide told us that there has been a church at least since Roma times. It became well known for its part in the Lincolnshire rising in 1536 and in the war between King and Parliament.
The church itself is a mixture of styles but the over restoration by the Victoriana predominates.
We were very lucky in having excellent guides to both churches
