MORTON, Nr Gainsborough. St Pauls
The first visit of 2017 took place at St Pauls, Morton near Gainsborough in April. The church was enlarged several times in the late 19thC at a cost of £11,000and has attractive painted ceilings and numerous stained glass windows - the south transept windows depicting Bishop Grosseteste, Bishop Hugh and King Alfred. The windows depicting biblical scenes are extremely rare and are painted by the artist William Morris from the designs of Edward Burne-Jones. The font is made of Durham Fosterley marble and has an enormous oak carved hood. The church has been described as one of the loveliest in Lincolnshire.
